Cut what
the water
hides.
Read the numbers at the edge of the block. Ink the unbroken runs. Cut the empty grain. Three plates wait between the lake and the paper.

Numbers become
a shoreline.
Each clue describes consecutive inked cells in its row or column. Separate multiple runs with at least one cut square. Complete every indigo cell to pull the print.

Read every run
A clue of “3 2” means three solid cells, a gap, then two more somewhere on that line.

Cross the grain
Cut cells you know are empty. Completed row and column clues fade like dry ink.

Pull the image
When every required cell is inked, the block rolls onto paper and the next plate arrives.

The first fish was printed from memory.
No specimen crossed the studio door. The old cutter watched the lake at dusk, counted the breaks in the surface, and carved until the empty squares became a bass.
